Clothes are never a frivolity: they always mean something.
Believe it or not, dressing your family up in white shirts and jeans doesn’t result in the best photos you could possibly capture. Dressing the family in Teletubby costumes could be considered worse, but only just.
Ever looked back at photos from yesteryear and instantly been able to date it to a decade based on what people are wearing? Sometimes it increases the photos value, most times it detracts from the essence of the image as you silently judge (and laugh) that Uncle Derrick hasn’t changed his fashion sense since he wore a matching crocheted striped beany and sweater.
To avoid this silent judging by your sweet dear children in twenty years time, we recommend plain clothing with subdued colours so it doesn’t detract from the human connection we try to capture. Natural dark unsaturated greens and browns are probably the best, but it doesn’t have to be all dark! Light breezey colours like pastel yellows and blues can be great also. Button up shirts for boys will often give the best presentation.
There are never ending lists we could go through, but I think the most important thing to remember is to wear what you feel comfortable in. Most people are nervous leading up to photo shoots because they don’t know what to expect, or “aren’t models”. Add the stress of trying to pick something to wear that is uncomfortable and not what you would normally choose and you won’t enjoy the session.
As a photographer, our job is to make you feel at ease. Our specialty is to work with our clients to capture their best side - tell the story of your family and bring out individual personalities no matter what your wearing!
